There are many opportunities to get involved with the Haiti Parish Twinning Program. Listed below are some of our ongoing volunteer needs.
Medical Mission Trip – This is an annual trip to set up and run a free primary care medical clinic. Volunteers include both medical and non medical personnel. Medical personnel have included doctors, nurses, and dentists. We are also looking for eye care professionals as well. Non medical personnel have been used to manage the pharmacy, help with crowd control, and work in provide assistance to the dentists. Medical Mission Trip Prep – Each year in preparation for the annual medical mission all the medical supplies and medicine that will be used in the clinic is packed. We both purchase and receive donations of medicine and supplies which are removed from their containers and repacked in dosage form in zip lock bags for easy transport. The “Pill Packing” that is necessary to prepare for the trip is started several months before the trip. We are always looking for volunteers to help in this exercise. Annual Sea Container Shipment – Each Spring the parish sends down a wide range of supplies to St. Jean du Sud. Volunteers are always needed to help staff on collection days, pack up donations, and drive the supplies to the sea container consolidation location in Nashville, TN. Health Committee – This group is focused on improving the health care available within the community of St. Jean du Sud. For further information contact Kathy Murphy-Baum jk.baum@sbcglobal.net
Clean Water / Sanitation Programs – We are working with the community in St. Jean du Sud to find ways to improve the access to and quality of the drinking water which is at the root of many health issues in Haiti. Our activities have included a recent water study of the area by a hydrologist, introduction and training on water filtration products, and a newly initiated project to construct some public lavatories in the community. Sponsor a Student Program – You can improve the life of a child in Haiti by sponsoring a child to go to school. Annual cost for tuition and books is $XXX. To sponsor a child or to participate on the committee that oversees this program please contact Corky Bahr at hjcfbahr@prodigy.net
Scholarship Program – The scholarship program provides funding for post secondary education. To donate or to participate on the committee that reviews scholarship applications please contact Corky Bahr at hjcfbahr@prodigy.net
Economic Development – We are currently exploring ways which we can support economic development in the community of St. Jean du Sud and are in the process of working with local leaders there. If you are interested in getting involved please contact Paul Wobbe at pjwobbe@gmail.com
